Ok, it’s end of January and we are still waiting for proper snowfall. Winter temperatures have arrived already a while ago, but somehow cold winds are all we have seen so far.
Luckily these cold temperatures allow for preparing artificial snow which is being done in certain areas in Helsinki. It is kind of funny as I have never seen/heard about municipalities producing snow here – until I bumped into the snow manufacturing site in Leppävaara. Yep, here snow is produced in one little shadowy side-valley, piled up and then distributed from there to the skiing tracks where it’s then prepared using a snow grooming machine.
In the mean time a track of 2km is ready allowing me to do some first training on skis – it’s not much, but at least a start and it’s close to our home… Let’s hope that proper snow will arrive soon, otherwise Engadin Skimarathon will be seriously tough this year…
