Vang Vieng

As we are progressing with our work, we stopped at several stations along our flightpath. To increase the flying time of our helicopter, I drove most of the time together with our GPS-crew. Like this I had plenty of chances to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Lao countryside.

Mit dem Fortschreiten unseres Projektes, kommen wir auch an immer mehr Orte entlang unseres Flugkorridors. Um das Fluggewicht zu verringern und somit die Flugzeit des Helikopters zu erhöhen, fahre ich regelmässig mit der GPS-Crew zum nächsten Dorf und hab so unterwegs die Möglichkeit, die schönen Landschaften Laos zu geniessen.

There are many places in Laos, which are full of tourists, but none of them is like Vang Vieng. Full of drunk teenage-tourists, this city was for sure not my most favorite place to stay, even though the surrounding carst mountains are really beautiful (especially if you fly over them in the helicopter ;-) ).

Viele Orte in Laos sind voller Touristen, doch keiner ist wie Vang Vieng. Lauter betrunkene Teenager aus aller Welt, welche für die verschiedenen Outdoor-Aktivitäten hier sind. Auch wenn die Gesellschaft nicht sehr angenehm ist, die Karstberge, welche die Stadt umgeben sind extrem eindrücklich (vor allem aus der Helikopterperspektive ;-) )

Luang Prabang

The old capital city managed to keep it’s french colonial charme throughout the years. No surprise that this city is the number 1 place-to-visit for all the backpackers and tourists.

Die alte Hauptstadt hat noch immer den alt-französischen Kolonialstil aus alten Zeiten. Kein Wunder ist diese Stadt das Nr.1 Reiseziel aller Touristen und Backpacker.

Oudomxai

Maybe the only stop which is worth being called “the real Lao”. There is literally nothing going on in this town. The major language spoken here is for sure chinese, and after that mostly lao and for sure not much english. There is just a buddha statue and a stupe next to it, which one could call tourist attractions. Other than that, I counted a total of 5 bars/cafes in town, none of which I would call a “real” restaurant. Made it easier to choose where to go for a beer in the evening…

Dies war wahrscheinlich der einzige Stop während unserem Projekt, welchen man als Beispiel des “richtigen Laos” bezeichnen könnte. Es gab buchstäblich nichts interessantes in dieser Stadt. Durch die hohe Anzahl Chinesen die hier leben, spricht man heute schon mehr chinesisch als Lao, und erst recht nicht englisch. Es gibt eine Buddhastatue mit einer kleinen Stupa daneben, aber das war’s dann auch schon an Touristenattraktionen. Ansonsten hab ich insgesamt 5 Bars/Cafés gezählt, wobei ich keine dieser Locations als “richtiges” restaurant bezeichnen würde. Jedenfalls war so die Wahl der Bar für das Feierabendbier stark vereinfacht…

Vientiane

The final part of the railroad was back in Vientiane. Finally back in our really nice hotel, in a more civilized world with a huge pool and a real finish sauna.

Das letzte Teilstück des Eisenbahnprojekts war dann wieder in der Umgebung von Vientiane. Endlich wieder zurück in unserem schönen Hotel, in einer zivilisierteren Welt mit einem riesigen Pool und einer richtigen finnischen Sauna.
